Houston…we have a poop!

After my anxious writing yesterday I wanted to jump on here to share the good news! Ellie pooped (and peed) outside multiple time now and has had no accidents inside today! I believe it was the Trazodone causing the incontinence since that’s the only thing that’s changed and will have to remember that in the future and hope we don’t need it moving forward. I did give her a couple tablespoons of pumpkin with dinner, not sure if it was the difference maker or if it was just time, I didn’t give her anymore so I guess if she get stopped up again then we’ll know.

we have started heat therapy (10min 3x a day) today to help with the healing of her incision and getting any seromas to be absorbed, she doesn’t appear to have but I’m not expert.

Its amazing how exhausting worrying is. I try very hard to focus on the positives, but can’t help searching to see if there’s something else I should be doing to fix whatever is ailing her. It’s one reason I’m trying to remain dedicated to having a detailed blog of her recovery, for others in the future to see. I know all dogs recovery is different, but knowing that it is completely normal for a dog not to poop for 4-5 days after surgery was so reassuring for me to not panic about that yesterday. Here’s to the rest of the day being smooth sailing!

Getting her well deserved rest after being the pooping queen👑

  1. WHEEEE!!!! Isn’t it the best when that first stinky dump gets dropped? Like OMD your neighbors are probably thinking you’ve lost your mind when you jump up and down to celebrate lol!

So, yeah, the Traz. That’s my guess too. It’s really a medication we see a lot of Tripawds getting right now, and honestly I don’t think it’s all that necessary for big ol chill dogs like Ellie. For a young dog, yeah, give it to them to zonk em out so they can heal. But for a bigger dog, we do tend to see incontinence and just a reluctance to get up or do things. They REALLY chill with the Traz.

I’m thinking she could also be having some incision aches. Laying in the shower tells me she’s looking for a cool spot to lay the incision on. We see a lot of that. I think you said you iced it? If she’ll let you I would continue to do more of that.

If she’s not showing signs of a seroma, I wouldn’t worry about that right now. See, one less thing to worry about! And yes, worrying is exhausting. Focus on what’s going on right in front of you, not necessarily on what could happen. You’ll feel better and so will she.

Also if she continues to be reluctant to move around, let the vets know so that you can fine tune her medication schedule and dosing. That’s not unusual at all.

    Keep us posted!

    1. Whoo hoo! Yes I’ve never been so excited for poo before! Hahaha.
An incision ache makes sense, she started going for the cold spots after the nocita wore off. She still wants nothing to do with her bed or the rugs, but has opted for this oddball mat I had on hand which is better than nothing…so hopefully that’s a sign it’s starting to feel better.
Thanks so much for the continued insight!!
